A Journey from Doubt to Strength: Rebuilding Confidence After Injury

The Silence in the Pool

The silence in the pool felt deafening. For as long as I could remember, the rhythmic pull of the water and the powerful push off the wall had been my solace. It was where I went to untangle my thoughts, quiet the noise of the day, and feel a sense of effortless strength.

Then came the unexpected fall — a fractured shoulder, multiple surgeries, and a long road to recovery. What seemed like a small incident grew into a sharp protest from my body, silencing my strokes altogether.

Losing My Ground

Running was the other half of my sanity. The jolt of pavement beneath my feet grounded me. It was my way to clear my head and feel the burn of a good workout.

But my ankle, once dependable, became a source of constant, throbbing pain — an arthritic protest that made every step a reminder of what I had lost. In my late fifties, the person I saw in the mirror started to feel like a stranger. The fit, strong body I had worked so hard to maintain was suddenly failing me.

The Emotional Toll

The loss of these activities wasn’t just physical — it was deeply personal. My confidence plummeted. The go-to stress relievers I’d always relied on were gone, replaced by frustration and worry.

The calm and control I once found in movement were replaced with feelings of being adrift and powerless. I could no longer join my active friends and family in the activities that once connected us. The mental toll became just as heavy as the physical one — a profound, unsettling experience of doubt and identity loss.

Shifting Focus: From Loss to Possibility

The Mental Shift

The first step in my recovery wasn’t a physical one; it was mental. I had to stop mourning what I’d lost and start celebrating what I could still do.

This perspective shift was grounded in a new mantra:
“I am evolving.”

I had to let go of the swimmer and the runner — and embrace the adaptable, evolving version of myself. This affirmation became the foundation of my new routine.

A New Approach to Movement

Instead of pushing through pain, I began to explore gentle, functional forms of movement that supported healing.

Yogalates and Mindful Strength

I turned to Yogalates, a blend of yoga and Pilates. It strengthened my core, improved flexibility, and restored balance without stressing my shoulder or ankle. Each session became a lesson in gratitude — a chance to appreciate the simple act of moving and breathing.

I also adjusted my strength training:

  • Heavy weights were replaced with resistance bands and light repetitions.

  • High-impact exercises gave way to controlled, joint-stabilizing movements.
The goal was no longer performance — it was longevity, stability, and function.

Embracing Longevity and Function

This journey became more than injury management; it evolved into a philosophy for long-term health and wellbeing.

My confidence didn’t return because I could swim or run again — it came from proving that I could adapt, rebuild, and thrive despite challenge. I was no longer training to compete; I was training to live well for years to come.

The Power of Self-Talk: Words Shape Reality

Reframing the Inner Dialogue

It’s easy to fall into an endless loop of negative self-talk:
“I’m tired.”
“I’m not who I was.”
“I’m getting old.”

But words are powerful — they shape our mindset, actions, and ultimately our reality. The more we reinforce negativity, the more we live it.

Reframe Your Thoughts

  • Instead of “I’m so old,” say “I’m committed to feeling capable and vibrant.”

  • Instead of “I’m depressed,” try “I’m growing and working on my mental health.”

Positive Affirmations to Begin With

  • “I’m grateful for all that I have.”

  • “I’m growing stronger every day.”

  • “I’m thriving, not just surviving.”

  • “I am successful and capable.”

This isn’t about ignoring challenges — it’s about shifting your perspective and actively creating a more positive reality.

From Words to Action: Breathing and Mindful Movement

The Power of Breath

Our breath anchors us to the present and regulates our nervous system.

  • Short, shallow breaths trigger stress.

  • Deep, slow breaths create calm and clarity.

Try This: Conscious Breathing with Affirmations

As you inhale, think “I am strong.”
As you exhale, release weakness or tension.

Or practice the Four-Square Breath — inhale for four counts, hold for four, exhale for four, hold for four — pairing it with affirmations like:
“Inhale: I am.”
“Hold: Grateful.”
“Exhale: I am.”
“Hold: At peace.”

Mindful Movement Practices

Movement becomes transformative when we do it with awareness and intention.

  • Yoga and Flow: Use poses to embody affirmations — “I am strong,” “I am stable.”

  • Walking Meditation: Sync affirmations with each step — Left foot: “I am.” Right foot: “Thriving.”

  • Release and Shake: When tension builds, literally shake it out while repeating, “I release what no longer serves me.”

By merging positive self-talk, breath, and mindful movement, we move from saying to embodying our affirmations — speaking and living our way into a better reality.

Integrating Mind-Body Awareness in Physiotherapy

As a physiotherapist and wellbeing facilitator, I now use these insights to empower others.
Helping clients connect their mind, breath, and body creates a deeper level of healing.

Mindful Self-Talk in Practice

Guide clients to reframe their thoughts:

  • During a stretch: “I’m creating space and mobility.”

  • During balance work: “I am stable and grounded.”

  • During effort: “I’m getting stronger with every repetition.”

Breath and Movement Integration

  • Teach conscious breathing during exercises to calm the nervous system.

  • Encourage mindful attention to movement, alignment, and sensation.

  • Incorporate “shake it out” moments to release tension and reset energy.

By combining physical rehabilitation with positive mindset training, we help people not only recover but rediscover their strength, adaptability, and confidence.

Conclusion: Speaking Life Into Your Healing

This experience taught me that recovery is not just about regaining movement — it’s about reclaiming self-belief.

When we shift from “I can’t” to “I’m evolving,” everything changes.
Your words, your breath, and your movement can either hold you back or move you forward.
Choose to speak life into yourself — and watch how your reality begins to transform.
