Why the June Winter Solstice is the Perfect Time to Let Go and Flourish

DAILY HABITS

Jun 28, 2026

As we approach the June Winter Solstice, there is a distinct shift in the air. Here in the Southern Hemisphere, the days have grown shorter, the nights longer, and nature has slowed to a gentle, quiet crawl. It is the darkest day of the year, but it is also one of the most spiritually—and physically—powerful moments of the year.

At The Self Project, we often talk about aligning ourselves with the natural rhythms of the earth. In my clinical practice, I see how often we force our bodies to live in a perpetual "summer"—always producing, always striving, always on display, always switched on.

We hold our breath, tense our shoulders, and push through pain.

But nature doesn't bloom all year round, and neither should we.

The Winter Solstice is a seasonal and biological invitation to stop pushing. It is nature’s sacred pause. If your body has been feeling heavy, exhausted, or emotionally and physically stuck, this is your permission slip to curl inward, release what no longer serves you, and create the conditions to truly flourish.

The Power of Darkness: Curling Inward to Rest

In our modern world, we are taught to fear the dark, just as we are taught to push through fatigue. We often view tiredness as a weakness rather than a biological message.

Yet the Winter Solstice reminds us that darkness and rest are fertile ground.

From a physiotherapy perspective, curling inward reflects spinal flexion—the posture of protection, safety, and restoration. When we soften and fold into ourselves, we send signals to the nervous system that it is safe to move out of "fight or flight" and into the parasympathetic "rest and digest" state.

Before you can expand, you must first allow yourself to coil.

Movement Tip: Restorative Child’s Pose

Drop your hips back toward your heels, rest your forehead on the mat, and allow your spine to gently curve.

Close your eyes and settle into the darkness behind your eyelids.

As you breathe, direct your inhale into the space between your shoulder blades and into your lower back. Feel your ribs expand behind you like a parachute opening. With every exhale, imagine releasing the heavy winter coat of old habits, unrealistic expectations, and physical tension into the earth beneath you.

Nature’s Lesson in Surrender and Physical Release

Look outside.

The trees are not panicking because they have lost their leaves. They are not forcing flowers to bloom in the middle of winter. Instead, they are drawing their energy inward, nourishing their roots and conserving strength for the season ahead.

This is not defeat.

This is wisdom.

When we chronically hold onto stress, our bodies respond. Muscles tighten, joints become restricted, jaws clench, breathing becomes shallow, and the nervous system remains on high alert.

Choosing to let go—whether it is a job, a limiting belief, a stagnant relationship, or the pressure to be perfect—is not giving up.

It is creating space.

Space in the body.

Space in the mind.

Space for something new to emerge.

One of my favourite reminders is:

"You cannot open your arms to reach for what makes you flourish if your hands are tightly clenched around things that hurt."

Opening to the Light: Planting the Seeds to Flourish

The beauty of the June Solstice is that it is a turning point.

From this day forward, the light slowly begins to return. Minute by minute. Day by day.

Physically, this mirrors spinal extension—the act of opening through the front of the body, lifting the chest, and expanding into possibility.

After a season of reflection and rest, the body naturally begins to seek light again.

This makes the solstice a powerful time to set intentions and move forward with purpose.

Now that you have created space, ask yourself:

What movement, what energy, what choice will allow me to flourish?

Movement Tip: Sphinx or Gentle Cobra

Lie comfortably on your stomach and place your forearms on the floor beneath your shoulders.

As you inhale, gently lift your chest, drawing your shoulder blades down and back.

Think of this less as a backbend and more as an unfurling.

Imagine exposing your heart centre to the returning sun. Feel the opening across your chest—the very area that becomes compressed through stress, technology use, and long hours at a desk.

Breathe deeply into this new space.

Your Solstice Ritual: A Somatic Flow to Welcome the Light

To help embody the energy of the solstice, try this simple ritual during the week of the Winter Solstice.

1. Cat-Cow Flow: The Dance Between Dark and Light

Come onto your hands and knees.

As you exhale, round your spine, tuck your chin, and draw inward into Cat Pose.

As you inhale, slowly arch your back, lifting your chest and tailbone into Cow Pose.

Move gently between these shapes for two to three minutes, allowing your breath to guide the rhythm.

Feel your spine soften, awaken, and become more fluid with each cycle.

2. The Written Release

Sit quietly with a piece of paper and write down everything you are ready to release.

Old stories.

Fears.

Pain.

Expectations.

Read them aloud and say:

"Thank you for the lessons, but I no longer need you."

Then safely burn the paper or tear it into tiny pieces as a symbolic act of letting go.

3. The Physical Invitation

On a fresh piece of paper, write one to three intentions that will help you flourish in the months ahead.

Stand tall.

Reach your arms wide.

Feel your chest expand.

Then speak your intentions aloud in the present tense:

"I move with ease."

"I trust myself."

"I step into my power every day."

Allow your body to embody the energy of the words you are speaking.

A Final Reflection

Be gentle with your biology during this season.

Allow yourself to rest.

Sleep a little longer.

Nourish yourself with warming foods.

Honour the quieter rhythms of winter.

Trust that there is wisdom in slowing down.

Your body knows how to navigate the dark.

The darkness is not here to swallow you.

It is a safe container, holding you while you gather strength, restore your energy, and prepare to bloom.
